It is likely that it comes from the Persian word meaning glass, but others believe that the word originated in Turkey nearly 500 years ago.

Today however, hookah shisha refers to the flavored tobacco used in hookah smoking. Hookah shisha is often soaked in fruit shavings, like strawberries, apples, and grapes, and therefore, is enjoyable to a variety of people. To enhance the flavor of the smoke, some hookah smokers will mix shisha tobacco with cola, lemon juice, or orange juice, when using the same flavor of tobacco.
